Sodium Butyrate Functions:
1. Maintaining beneficial gut microbiota: Butyrate inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria across cell membranes and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, maintaining a positive balance in the gut microbiota.
2. Providing a rapid energy source for intestinal cells: Butyrate is a preferred energy source for intestinal cells. Sodium butyrate is absorbed in the intestinal lumen and, through oxidation, rapidly provides energy to intestinal epithelial cells.
3. Promoting the proliferation and maturation of gastrointestinal cells: Young animals have immature digestive tracts, underdeveloped intestinal villi and crypts, and insufficient digestive enzyme secretion, resulting in poor nutrient absorption. Studies have shown that sodium butyrate is an activator that increases intestinal villi proliferation and crypt depth, expanding the intestinal absorption area.
4. Effects on animal production performance: Sodium butyrate can increase feed intake, feed efficiency, and daily weight gain. It also enhances animal health and reduces diarrhea and mortality.
5. Promotes the function of both non-specific and specific immune systems.
6. Its distinctive odor has a strong palatability effect on piglets, making it suitable as a palatability enhancer; it can be added to various feeds to improve daily weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and economic efficiency.
Sodium Butyrate Clinical Applications:
Sodium butyrate, as a deacetamase inhibitor, can increase histone acetylation levels. Studies have found that sodium butyrate can inhibit tumor cell proliferation, promote tumor cell senescence and apoptosis, which may be related to its ability to increase histone acetylation. Sodium butyrate has also been used in clinical research on tumors. It can be widely used as a feed additive for livestock and poultry.
